Why not compete against yourself?

Why not compete against yourself?

This might initially sound crazy but when you sit back and think about it; it actually makes sense. Why not compete yourself?

Let’s suppose for a moment that your online business focuses on selling wireless phone accessories. You already have main web site up and running. You participate in various online marketing strategies like banner advertising, search engine marketing (both paid and free), along with other types of marketing to drive traffic to your web site. There’s just one problem! What happens when they don’t click on your web site? They go to someone else’s and you lose the opportunity of selling to that prospect.

By competing against yourself; you can drive more traffic and visibility towards your products and services thus making more sales. So how do you compete against yourself? The answer is really quite simple! Just create a second and third web site with different domains. For example, if you sold wireless phone accessories maybe your main domain is called abcwirelessphonestuff.com. Why not create a site that the domain name is geared towards car chargers for wireless phones, and then another domain name geared towards Bluetooth headsets, etc. Make the feel and look of each site different focusing on strong search engine optimization of each site. You can even play around with the pricing a bit with each different site. For example, the site that the domain name is focused on car chargers you might reduce the price of them by a dollar. Do the same for the web site focused on Bluetooth headsets. If a visitor clicks on all three sites you gain maximum exposure of your products and services and they feel they are comparing the pricing of three different companies. You win with more exposure and higher market penetration.

Here are a few things to remember:

1.       Register a domain name that is memorable and specific to your industry.

2.       Choose a reputable web hosting company that provides an uptime guarantee, money back guarantee, and even a support time response guarantee.

3.       Don’t cut corners when building your new site. It’s okay to take time developing the new site after all your competing against yourself remember.

4.       Don’t make your color scheme or web site layouts look exactly the same as your existing web site. Change it up a little and explore the opportunities you have with navigation links on top versus the side, pastel colors vs. solid colors, etc. Never know you may realize some advantages for all of your websites when it comes to product placement and promotion.

5.       Don’t and please really don’t try and host several various web sites on just one hosting account to save a buck by forwarding domains to specific sub-domain names. Spending the extra money will likely prove beneficial in the long run through increased traffic to all of your company web sites. Seriously it doesn’t cost that much to get a good, reliable and cheap web hosting company.

6.       Focus on a handful of keywords for each web site. This will enable you to specifically market towards a niche market. When you identified a specific niche market it becomes much easier to run and manage more effective marketing campaigns.

I just read an article moments ago that I thought was interesting and it was in regards to this same topic. The article talked about not lowering prices during a down time because it can be difficult to raise prices once things start going back up. The article referrence the popular diaper company Pampers and how they introduced Luvs as a secondary and “more affordable” product. The benefit was they didn’t have to lower the cost of the brand name item keeping its value in the market place and they competed against themselves through the different product of luvs. Thought I would share since I just wrote this article the other day!
